Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to provide enough coverage of the basics of Maori syntax to enable the reader to understand why the actor-emphatic construction of Maori is so problematic, and to provide enough data about the construction to enable the reader to participate in the arguments about the possible derivation of the construction. It is not written within the LFG framework; the author was given the brief of providing basic data, rather than an LFG paper.
