PARSEME SC meeting per video-conference 11 January 2016 Adam, Carla, Cvetana, Manfred, Veronika, Yannick, Mike, Victoria, Agata ============ Minutes: 1. Response to the month 30 monitoring review (feedback on deliverables): - the shared task final workshop is planned for April 2017 (co-located with ACL 2017 in Valencia), which is 1 month after the end of PARSEME (7 March 2017) - budget year 4 will be 3 month shorter than years 1-3, so the budget will be 25% lower; 3 events are already planned, we don't have enough budget for the shared task workshop - we will ask for an extension of the duration with extra budget 2. Ideas for year 4 objectives: - Getting the state-of-the-art surveys published (WG1 volume, WG3 surveys) - Starting a series on MWEs with LSP (with a PARSEME editorial board) -this would go beyond the duration of the action, with one book every 12-18 months - Best practices - shared task - outreach, multilingualism, worldwide participation - Putting forward standards for MWE annotation and encoding (WG4, WG1, ...) 3. Validation of the current STSM requests - 2 applications with reasonable budget and scientific program - Sascha has already had an STSM - the total budget goes beyond the year 3 STSM budget - MC approval is necessary for a budget shift - all in favor of the the STSMs (provided that the 1000 EUR budget shift is granted) 4. Update on the WG1 workshop in Skopje - participants selected and contacted, - some PARSEME people had to be rejected (they are not using tools), some are on the waiting list - we hope for good synergies between the two actions 5. General meeting in Struga - rooms needed for the WG sessions (WG1: 1 room; WG2: 1 room; WG3: 1 room; WG4: 1 room) - methodology for the WG sessions * WG1 - what to do with the templates? how to publish them? MWEs and translations (unsure how to develop it) - see possible interaction with WG3 * WG2 - invited talk by Aarne Ranta and colleague "Grammatical Framework" (to confirm); two sessions: general overview of the GF, MWE-related issues; short discussion on the volume call; reading assignments on GF to those who cannot participate in both sessions * WG3 - one session on the final draft of the surveys; no precise plans for the second session, maybe recommendations arising from the survey; maybe common time with WG1 around translation * WG4 - survey, new results; recommendation of automatic extraction of lexicons from treebanks (is belongs to WG4 deliverables but Victoria has no expertize in this field) 6. Update on the contents of the training school - validation of the the modules by Adam and Victoria (all in favor) - one module on MWEs in SMT - candidates Fabienne Cap - translating German compounds as compounds in SMT (can she give a general introduction to SMT?) Alex Fraser - worked with Fabienne on compounds in SMTs, and on morphology in SMTs, but MWEs are not his dominating subject Philipp Koehn - "big name" in SMT, author of a book on SMT, great lecturer (moved to the USA), tried to include linguistic features to SMT (compound splitting); paper on splitting compound in SMT Martin Volk - worked on translating compounds and their elliptical occurrences (e.g. "face" (EN) -> "Wand" (DE) rather than "Gesicht" if "north face" occurred before) Eric Wehrli - had a poster in Malta on translation of collocations (in a rule-based translation engine) - one module on one of the following: * MWE semantics (Nathan Schneider - mention light verbs in his recent tutorial on semantics, maybe he can extend it; BTW: his contribution to the WG4 wiki table would be welcome) * MWEs in deep learning (Giuseppe Attardi) * Construction Grammar (Martin Hilpert) - other ideas: a lecture as a result from WG3 surveys 7. WG progress report - WG4 - quite much work on the TLT paper done, another abstract in LREC (next deadline before Struga); new people recruited to WG4; best practices for annotation guidelines is a challenging task (UD are emerging as a standard for dependency treebanks but other proposals need to be considered) - WG3 - on-line meetings on a regular basis, version of the SOA draft available - WG2 - call for contributions to a volume to appear soon - WG1 - comments of the reviewers sent to authors of the WG1 volume, deadline for the revised versions - February, final version LSP submission - before summer; progress in the MWE encoding paper (from Iasi), paper to be submitted before Struga 8. Next meeting: - Struga, 7 April 2016 (first day, 16:00-17:00, partly in parallel with Annotathon meeting 1) 9. Any other business - the Renater meeting room worked very well for all except Cvetana, who lost almost everything - poster selection - to be handled per email - poster evaluation criteria in EasyChair should not directly contribute to the final score (e.g. "I can't value the quality of the work" has the highest value in its category: 6) - one submission to Struga in French - next time we should explicitly mention that submissions are to be in English %%% TODO: Adam: - check that the poster evaluation criteria in EasyChair do not directly contribute to the final score Cvetana: - inform the STSM candidates about the conditional approval (provided that the budget shift is approved) Yannick: - inform Aarne about the readings for those who won't participate in the 2 sessions Manfred+Agata: - discuss the creation of a MWE series at LSP Agata: - MC vote for budget shift and action extension - ask COST for the action duration extension with extra budget - contact speakers for the 2 remaining modules to the TS - email to WG leaders on deliverable in 3 documents (MoU, report, review) - test Cvetana's connection via Renater - next time - specify in the next call for posters that submissions must be in English - discuss with Yannick if the 2nd invited person (with Aarne) for WG2 sessions can be funded - propose a WG around extracting lexicons from treebanks (Victoria, Matthieu, Agata)
