Based on a survey of the languages of Europe, research by A. Siewierska and D. Bakker (as cited in Plank 1994a: 51) yielded the following hierarchy of agreement targets:Demonstrative < AttrAdjective < Pred Adjective < Article. In other words, if any one or more of the three constituents – attributive and predicative adjective and article – agree with the noun, the demonstrative does so too.
