Counterexamples
Kashmiri (Indo-Iranian) could be a problem for this correlation. Its word order is far from simple. According to Zaxar’in & Edelman (1971: 125), it is relatively free, but standard order is Subject-Finite Verb-Object (see Payne 1995).
