An AGENTIVE OBJECT is the constituent of surface structure which encodes (or can encode) the referent of the subject of the corresponding active construction, whatever its underlying role; cf. German:a. Ich kann Ihnen ein Buch darüber geben, es ist von einem Arzt verfaßt . /es ist von einem Arzt verfaßt worden. ‘I can give you a book about this, it is written (Present, Resultative) / it has been written (Perfect, Passive) by a physician.’b. Dieses Buch hat ein Arzt verfaßt. ‘A physician has written this book.’
