Particles are arguably the most common means of signalling question status cross-linguistically. Both the synchronic nature and the diachronic origins of question particles are, however, understudied. P9 aims to address this gap by combining typological and historical-corpus-based methods to investigate the precise range of functions that question particles can have and how those functions develop over time.
